Fashion in Scotland

When we think of fashion, what are the places that spring to mind? I think I can guess: New York, Paris, Milan, London. The cities with the finger on the fashion pulse are the ones that we hear about the most- so surely they are the only places worth a mention? Blah blah blah. Yes, these cities are peppered with the cream of the fashion crop, but should we really overlook the rest of the world?
Turkey is never somewhere that we would associate with fashion but look at the recent success of Hakaan- Kate Moss and Carine Roitfeld sat front row at his shows as he sent waves through the fashion industry. Ireland is overlooked, but it produces many notable style icons. And what about Scotland?
Wherever we grow up, we will create a strong bond with. Our sense of style and outlook on the fashion industry is shaped by our environment and the people around us. Growing up in Scotland has allowed my love of fashion to blossom , even though people never expect Scotland to have style.

We are a country of stereotypes. All those American tourists love to praise "SCAT-land" for it's famous golf courses and our rich history- who doesn't love a historic castle, eh? People expect us to turn up rocking a kilt with a mane of irn-bru hued hair, a tin of shortbread in hand. This is total nonsense, but we are all guilty of stereotyping!

Fashion inspiration, however, can be found everywhere and Scotland has so many cities and so many unique people that we can not simply write it off as a scenic, historic bore.

Through a few work experiences and research I have learnt more and more about Scotland's fashion industry. We have a number of up and coming designers like a guy I met who designed a dress for Cheryl Cole and is set to intern at American Vogue in a short while. We have an impressive network of stylists and photographers who work on Scottish magazines, as well as other prestigious campaigns. We have models-galore with some really exciting modelling talent coming straight out of the heart of Scotland (most aren't even ginger- shock horror!). We also have so many stylish and fashion-forward people parading their fashion finds from George Street to Sauchiehall Street.

Edinburgh is my absolute favourite. Am I biased?... Perhaps. But I still see a lot of really stylish people here. Style is not trends or how "quirky" you look- style is something far more personal and though what someone is wearing may not be suitable for the pages of Elle or Harpers, it is still stylish. I find Edinburgh to be quintessentially stylish- we have so many businesswomen here and I find that some of them are so chic: camel coats, leather pencil skirts, tapered trousers. The look is never OTT or garish- they don't blindly follow trends but they do make an effort and they do have a huge impact. These gorgeous ladies with swishy hair and gym-honed physiques are often lunching at Pret or frantically dashing about the city centre carrying Starbucks mugs and furiously typing on a Blackberry. We also have those indie people- the ones who inhabit Urban Outfitters with that moody-cool expression and edgy fashion, quickly nipping out for a cigarette before browsing cool t-shirts and the latest Kitsuné effort. Then we have the 'Yah's'... UGG boots, comfy clothes that scream "yes, I can afford this!" and glossy blonde hair back-combed within an inch of it's life... Lucky Edinburgh.

Glasgow is pretty cool too. Kind of overlooked you could say, with the connotations of delightful 'neds' and lovely wee old ladies. However some of the coolest Scottish people seem to live in Glasgow- especially men. I have seen so many attractive, stylish men in Glasgow ranging from gorgeous "boy in the band" looks to polished suits- very "A Single Man". The girls are often pretty cool too lots of students with some girls doing really quirky looks and some sticking to more chic alternatives. Generally- Scotland has got style!

Think of all our fashion offspring! Christopher Kane is a total fashion genius- he designs at Versus by Versace and still has his own line which is one of the most anticipated at every LFW- and he comes from North Lanarkshire. We have fashion designer du jour Holly Fulton coming from Edinburgh then working at Lanvin before doing her own collections with delicious geometric prints and lovely jewellery. We have style icons like Tilda Swindon- the totally unique beauty who is the face of Pringle (another high-fashion Scottish name) and inspires many other naturally pale beauties. We also have beautiful models like Stella Tennant and Kirsty Hume who are both massive names in the global fashion industry with Stella now a Chanel muse and Kirsty splitting her time between NYC and Ayr. Then lets not forget Annie Lennox and her super stylish daughter- Tali. Scotland has produced some great fashion names and we should be totally proud.

We have a huge number of really creative and really talented people within Scotland! We have so many fashion designers and stylists who are destined for big things in the industry and Scotland has never looked better.

I guess, the truth of the matter is that fashion can be found anywhere and though we can fantasise about working in London or galavanting around Rue Cambon, we should embrace what we have here and wherever we may live- fashion really is everywhere.

Wednesday

Halloween!

I always check out the American Apparel website to see some of the great looks out there in their annual costume contest! Here are my pick of the best ones...

Naturally these require quite a bit of work but I think they are great for a bit of inspiration (LOVE the Juno and Bleeker idea- so cute!). Halloween can be a really tricky time as everyone is wanting to look original and cool- straying from that little red dress with plastic horns.
I have seen some amazing costumes on the American Apparel website (also check out their own ideas using AA garments) but also look around a few other websites for inspiration too, or if you are feeling like something a little daring, look to Heidi Klum and Seal's Halloween parties (and costumes) as they are always totally crazy.
Some of my favourite ideas I have seen out there are Bowie (I am dying to try that lightening bolt), Blondie (so, so cool at the moment), Disney Villains (as seen at MAC), Karl Lagerfeld (amazing!), Bardot or Edie (such icons) and don't forget that it always looks great when you put your own spin on something clichéd- like this gorgeous girl has done with the cat look- so just have fun with it!

Tuesday

Statement Necklaces!

One of my favourite style updates at the moment is my H&M multi-row gem necklace (at just £8.99) which is amazing to glam-up even the most casual outfit. Recently, I have really fallen for Olivia Palermo's style and statement necklaces/bibs are her staple (she even did a collection of her own for designer Roberta Freymann)- just sling one of these high street numbers over a t-shirt and jeans or a LBD for instant chic!

Midi-Length it is then!

The town of Castellammare di Stabilia in Italy has made news today by introducing a ban on mini-skirts and low cut tops. Women who decide to shun this ban and rock a little mini will be charged £265!
I'm not entirely sure what to make of this ban- is it really correct to charge women for displaying too much flesh? Or is it just completely unfair?
As much as I shudder when I see someone in a skirt that is leaving very little to the imagination or a top that is exposing more than we really want to see- I think it's up to the woman, not anyone else!
The midi-skirt fad couldn't have come at a more appropriate time... Now I just need to work out how to wear one without looking like a librarian...

Kate Moss for Topshop!

So as I previously mentioned, Kate Moss and Topshop are ending their seasonal partnership and, come 2nd of November (definite date for your diary!), we will all be able to get our hands on Kate's final seasonal collection with the high street giant. I am SO totally excited! Topshop describe her new collection as

"70s inspired looks, luxurious limited edition evening dresses and girly lingerie"

It sounds delicious! Especially given that 1970s looks are going to be super huge for summer too! I love when Kate does that nonchalant boho and i'll love to see her winter twist on the look.
However, along with her gorgeous new A/W collection (check it out at www.topshop.com as they have an "Exclusive Preview" video of Kate and her friends trying on the gorgeous little looks) Kate is bringing out the Kate Iconic collection which is SO exciting! Kate Iconic is a collection of 10 sell-out pieces from her past collections set to include those delectable little tea dresses and the sexy 'Panther' dress (which I am still coveting).
Check the Topshop website daily in the lead up to the collections release for the "7 Days of Kate" feature where a new item is unveiled- todays being a chic little tweed jacket. Also Topshop stores in London, Liverpool, Newcastle, Birmingham and Edinburgh will all be taking part in a a draw to win a trunk of Kate's iconic dresses. They'll be giving out "lucky keys" to give you a chance to own some of the most amazing dresses around!
To top it all off, she has put together a vintage-inspired jewellery collection to complement her collections. I better start saving for this one!

Monday

London/Milan!

This week I headed to London and Milan for a much needed holiday, obviously in two of the most fashionable cities in the world fashion was always on my mind! I did a lot of shopping picking up a few great buys (mostly in Topshop and Zara!) as well as looking at the wonderful window displays and beautifully dressed people of both cities! I took a tonne of pictures and here are just a few. (click on images to enlarge.)

Cheryl Style!

Tonight on the X Factor, though i'm not usually a huge fan of Cheryl's style, I fell in love with her Versace Versus dress! It is just stunning! And as I browsed Topshop's website I noticed this little top and thought I would do a little piece on how to get the look without splurging on a little bit of Christopher Kane at Versus!
The dress is cut-away and subtly sexy with leather panelling and a pleated skirt- it is a flirty LBD with an edgy twist- love it!
(I didn't actually see the shoes that Cheryl wore but I think a black edgy ankle boot would be perfect!)

Holiday Wishlist!

This holiday I plan to do a lot of Winter shopping (my current wardrobe is starting to look so tired!) and I searched the websites and put together a few of my must-haves on the high street at the moment!
I LOVE the camel coat- short enough to look youthful but classic enough to rock the look!
Also the little Topshop dress is perfect for a party- conservative while still glamourous!

Saturday

It's only Autumn, but...

With the fashion world abuzz with "summer's hottest trends" how can we resist looking at whats sticking around and what is totally out for summer (aviator jackets!) ?
The shows were quite something this season with old time favourites like Chanel and Prada pulling out all the stops, as well as new comers like Mary Kantrantzou and Hakaan showing off just how exciting new fashion is!

So here are some of the hottest trends that i've picked up on for the coming season!

Animal
While last season was full of luscious leopard prints, this season took a more novelty approach with animals printed on outfits at Louis Vuitton (as well as aqua zebra print- only Marc Jacobs could make that work!) and Prada (a totally crazy collection but still so cool). I loved these looks as it's so great to see such big fashion names not taking themselves too seriously! Fashion always needs a bit of fun!

Summer Leather
Leather seemed to be everywhere for summer (odd given that it is so uncomfortable in heat!) but it looked absolutely excellent! It was used with cool Americana reference at Balmain and much more elegantly at Chloé. Shows like Richard Nicoll and Marios Schwab used leather with a really edgy style (in tans and black) and though leather in summer sounds so wrong- it looks so good!

Midi-Skirts
It is official- the mini is over! Midi-skirts are so the way forward moving on from last season's ladylike skirts to more floaty calf-length ones. It's either maxi or midi to look really on trend for summer! These are surprisingly flattering and easy to wear as seen at Chloé and Fendi. They are sexy while still so elegant. Love this look!

The 70s
As with Winter, Summer has seen a huge 1970s revival (Harriet Quick at Vogue has pinpointed '73-'74 precisely!). And it is the most glamorous and gorgeous look around this season! See Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Halston among others for that super chic 70s glam look (its all about the flowing silky dresses and polished grooming!)
Neon
It is hardly the most conservative of trends and has awful connotations of trashy flouro-pink bikinis- but this season there was definitely something alluring about neon. Everyone from Christopher Kane to Miu Miu brought their collections to life with huge splashes of neon brights from acid green to yellow. Kane opted for really elegant shapes (like twinsets with midi-skirts) in embossed neon leather- classically zany but still really chic. Miu Miu showed a collection peppered with neon brights, bringing out the most covetable heels of the season with their neon details.
White
Every summer the collections are awash with crisp whites and pretty little white dresses- and this year is no exception! But white never gets boring- this season saw some lovely little white ballerina dresses at Chloé (I fell in love with them!) as well as some really sexy white jumpsuits at Hakaan. White always looks fresh and clean for summer and nothing can beat a white floaty dress on a hot day for easy chic!

Colour!
This season's shows were made up of a variety of seriously gorgeous colours! Every show involved some dash of colour ranging from rich expensive tones at Marc Jacobs and Lanvin to delicious tangerine at William Tempest and Céline, through some gorgeous pastel shades at Stella McCartney (who also involved a delicious fruit print!) and edgy Burberry Prorsum. This really is the season of vivid colours and there will always be one to suit you! Also red is sticking around from Winter (particularly more coral shades) with gorgeous little red lace dresses appearing at Erdem. Embrace bright shades and don't be afraid to clash them!

Obviously these aren't all the trends for summer but there are a few just to get you thinking about what pieces are wise to buy now! (coral dresses, biker jackets, leather trousers, pretty blouses, midi-skirts (in light fabrics rather than wool) coloured animal prints)

Thursday

Opulence on the cheap!

Every season comes at least one trend that verges on bad taste- there is always such a fine balance between chic and trashy- and this A/W the culprit is definitely the opulence trend!

Balmain did it to perfection with luscious minidresses and tousled hair, while Alexander McQueen went all out and went for the elegant approach with decadent decoration on gowns. The trend is built around gold brocades, lace, sequins, leopard print and leather. However, trying this trend when you aren't dripping in cash is always going to be a challenge- where can we get that expensive regal look without looking over the top and tacky? How can we combine leopard print and brocade and still look cool?

I looked at some of our favourite high street stores to search for some answers to these tricky questions. With some great pieces, I put together a few outfits for different occasions to show you that this trend needn't be daunting:

Kissy Kissy...

Fashion and music have always gone hand in hand with so much of a band or singer's appeal resting in their fashion credentials. So many stars have embodied this- Joan Jett of the Runaways, Kate Bush, Debbie Harry, David Bowie, Patti Smith and so on- but nowadays there are only a few who spring to mind when looking at how style and music work together and my favourite of all these (Karen O, Florence Welch etc) is Alison Mosshart of The Kills and The Dead Weather (with Jack White).

I absolutely love her style! Everything is always totally effortless but so cool. Her style is so reflected in her and Jamie Hince's music with that relaxed rock sound. My personal favourite is 'The Good Ones' which is really up there for me!

She never uses her sex appeal to sell her music yet is one of the most attractive musicians out there! She is such a style icon in how unique and relaxed her approach is to everything. She never tries to be cool, but always is. Her musical inspiration comes from Patti Smith, Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth among others contributing to her fabulous music.

Linking back to fashion, Jamie and Alison fronted the recent Zadig and Voltaire campaign (the label of Parisian cool-kids) with a super chic advert. Mosshart's signature style is worn jeans, slouchy t-shirts and glam-rock touches like her old Hedi Slimane gold boots. Her style is totally shaped by her musical influences as quoted from an interview with Derek Blasberg at Interview magazine:

"It’s a little peculiar. But I loved the way the bands I grew up admiring looked and the way they dressed. That was just as inspiring as the other elements. It’s the whole thing: the music, their lives, their style"
(see more at http://www.interviewmagazine.com/music/alison-mosshart/)

Here are some of the looks that make Mosshart a style icon:

Star Style at the Shows!

Stylish celebrities always flock to fashion week and this season was no exception. It is always all eyes on them with a buzz of "Who are you wearing?". Just another hugely exciting element of each fashion week!
Here are my pick of the hottest celebrity looks from Milan, Paris and London fashion week (excuse the miniscule font! if you click on the images to enlarge, you should be able to read them more clearly!) :

Fur, Fur, Fur

I recently did a piece on the allure of wearing a faux fur coat so I thought I would follow that up by showing some of the best faux-furs out there on the high street! Just slip on with anything from leather leggings and a t-shirt to an opulent mini-dress and have that 1960s chic look to a t!

Designer Focus!

This time last year, the name Hakaan probably fell on deaf ears (to most of us at least!). Now, though, Hakaan is the name on every fashion insider's lips with a huge following and all for great reasons!

With the past few seasons making way for some huge new names on the fashion scene like Holly Fulton and MeadhamKirchoff who now obviously have very respected fashion seasonal collections- room was certainly there for Hakaan to blossom!

Hakaan Yildirim is a London-based Turkish designer who was awarded the Young Fashion Designer award at Istanbul's Textile and Apparel Exporter Associations while still studying at university!

His fashion star really started to shine in February this year when buzz started to surround his debut show in LFW. He had Lara Stone modelling (the only show she did in London) and Kate Moss front row- not bad! To top it all off though, his show had French Vogue's Carine Roitfeld sat there to witness him wow the critics.

His first collection really lived up to all the hype with sexy little dresses flirting with feathers and leather constructed in a muted palette of white, black and nude.

This season's show in Paris, with his name has deservedly gaining prestige, was even better! He swapped London for Paris after having won this year's ANDAM award. Carine Roitfeld sat front row once again, with Naomi Campbell rocking a Hakaan leather skirt. His signature look is elegant, structured minimalism with a really sexy edge (leather crop tops anyone?) or as he puts it:

"contemporary yet feminine silhouettes, combining a strong architectural technique with ornamental and organic details." (Vogue.com)

Must Have!

In Topshop today, I came across some STUNNING dresses. A purple embellished playsuit crying out for some edgy shoes, an oh-so Céline leather and wool dress, a cerise 60s shift with elegant sleeves. Though one of Topshop's gowns that really caught my eye was a Grecian gown with a cream bodice and floaty skirt. The skirt is short at the front with an ethereal tail. It could easily be designer. The best part? A snip at £60!
The beauty of the dress is that it works in a classic style and for an edgy fashion-forward look. You could wear it with glossy groomed hair, MAC Russian Red lips and subtle footwear to let the angelic dress do the talking. Or you could rock it with grungy styling with edgy black shoes and an aviator jacket. Either way the dress is absolutely stunning! Definitely a great buy.

A spectacle of lace, sequins and the Grand Palais maze...

Wow, Wow, Wow.
These are the words that spring to mind when looking at the latest Chanel show. The fashion elite were left speechless after all the whispers as to how Lagerfeld would top last seasons show (a Chanel arctic setting). Lagerfeld always shows in the Grand Palais but this season his classic extravagant decor was taken to new levels. The building was transformed into a fantastical monochrome maze of a French garden with three fountains.
A huge variety of beautiful models walked this astounding catwalk in some classic, gorgeous attire (pastels, feathers, tweeds, lace, embellishment) to the awe of the vast audience.
The show culminated with Ines de la Fressange walking out to applause and cheering with the atmosphere elevating almost above a fashion show- perhaps to the scale that fashion shows once were.
A total spectacle- as ever!
